Humanities and Arts
Jakub Stejskal
This essay re-examines the once promising idea that style analysis can provide an independent source of insight into an artifact's non-stylistic context. The essay makes explicit the consequences of treating collective style as such a source in archaeology and anthropology of art, and further develops a new framing for the idea that avoids the criticisms largely responsible for the decline in theoretical interest in the epistemic import of visual style analysis since World War II. This re-framing proposes that inference from style to context is permissible on those occasions when a collective style signals by its morphology its suitability to serve a certain function. And it does so because it prescribes publicly certain modes of behavior or spectatorship. Furthermore, the public nature of the signaling may be such that it allows even uninitiated spectators to get a sense of it and thus to gain access to some of the motivations and norms informing the collective's form of life.
The study focuses on the interpretation of visual style through a hermeneutic lens, shifting from simply analyzing style elements in isolation to understanding the broader cultural, social, and historical context in which visual styles are produced and consumed. It explores how visual styles interact with and are shaped by context, rather than being seen as isolated aesthetic choices.
The study redefines "visual style" as not just a set of aesthetic choices or characteristics but as a dynamic relationship between visual elements and their surrounding contexts. This broader view allows for a more nuanced interpretation, where style is seen as influenced by cultural, political, and historical forces, rather than a simple expression of individual or artistic preference.
Hermeneutics, traditionally applied to textual analysis, is used in this study to interpret visual style. By employing a hermeneutic approach, the study emphasizes the importance of understanding the layers of meaning within visual style, considering not only the form and design but also the context, audience, and historical significance that inform how a visual style is perceived and understood.
By shifting from "style" to "context," the study argues that visual culture can be better understood as a dialogue between form and meaning. The meaning of a visual element is not solely determined by its appearance but by the context in which it is produced, displayed, and consumed. This shift allows for a deeper understanding of how visual culture reflects and shapes social, cultural, and political realities.
The study provides examples from a range of visual cultural artifacts, such as art, design, and advertising, to illustrate how style cannot be fully understood without considering its context. For instance, the visual styles of specific art movements, like modernism or postmodernism, can only be appreciated when their cultural and historical contexts are factored into the interpretation of their aesthetic choices.
The study contributes to visual culture by expanding the framework through which visual styles are analyzed. It challenges traditional approaches that focus on form alone and instead advocates for a more holistic approach that incorporates the broader socio-cultural, political, and historical contexts in which visual styles emerge and evolve.
Understanding visual style as context-dependent allows for a more comprehensive analysis of visual culture. It acknowledges that visual elements are never neutral; they are always embedded in larger systems of meaning and influence. This perspective opens up new avenues for studying how visual styles function as a form of cultural communication that interacts with societal norms, values, and power dynamics.
Visual style hermeneutics can be applied to contemporary visual culture by using a contextual analysis to interpret the significance of visual elements in current media, fashion, architecture, and advertising. By examining the social, political, and historical contexts of contemporary styles, researchers can gain insights into how these styles communicate messages about identity, power, and culture in the present day.
The study implies that art and design criticism should move beyond surface-level analysis of style and aesthetics. Critics and scholars should take into account the broader contexts—cultural, political, and historical—that inform and shape the creation and reception of visual works. This approach leads to a more enriched critique that accounts for the deeper meanings embedded in visual culture.
This approach influences art history by urging scholars to reconsider how they interpret and categorize visual styles. Rather than treating styles as isolated phenomena, the study encourages a more integrated analysis that considers how social and historical contexts shape artistic movements and visual representations. This shift in perspective can lead to a more nuanced understanding of art history, one that recognizes the interconnectedness of style, context, and meaning.
