The solo Quest

The benefits of solitude

We live in a highly connected world.  We may be work in huge teams, separated by significant geography, or instantly connect to many others across the globe through social media. Little of note can be accomplished as a solitary activity. The dynamics of a group can be thrilling and motivating. We are social creatures after all and whilst many may prefer to do most of their socialising outside of work, there is no doubt that work is a social activity. Lockdowns have proven that whilst there might be new opportunities from remote working there is no substitute for in person interactions.

So, interaction, team building, multi-tasking, viral, trending, blowing up are all good, and isolation is bad? Well yes but you might sometimes yearn to carry out some tasks alone or sometimes wish simply to be alone, and that might be when you are most productive- an arrogant thought perhaps.

You might want to listen to music, play an instrument, do a crossword, or complete a jigsaw puzzle as a solitary pursuit. Most great works of art were created by a single person, be they novels, painting, or musical compositions. If you consider a dancer or an athlete, they may train or be trained but the development of their mind body connection is a solitary activity. If an athlete, for example Lionel Messi, develops unique skills then clearly no one else could have taught them those skills.

We desire to reach out and influence other people, but we may also want to be creative and express ourselves. The creative process and the refinement of skills require solitary thinking. There is something about wanting to own it too, perhaps it’s self-indulgent.

In the hustle and buzzle and demands of our busy lives we may feel that we do not have the time to develop our individual passions and pursuits and yearn for that space and freedom. Those pursuits may engender us with a sense of wellbeing and be part of making us feel that we are living our best lives.

In a world that often celebrates social interactions and extroversion, the benefits of spending time alone are often overlooked. However, brought to you here through your favourite social media channel, solitude can be a valuable and enriching experience that offers a myriad of advantages:

Self-Discovery and Personal Growth

Solitude provides a space for introspection and self-reflection. When alone, you can better understand your thoughts, feelings, and motivations. This self-awareness can lead to personal growth, improved self-esteem, and a deeper understanding of goals and values.

Increased Productivity

Distractions are minimized, and you can fully focus on the task at hand. Whether it's tackling a work project, studying for an exam, or pursuing a personal hobby, solitude can enhance your ability to concentrate and get things done.

Enhanced Creativity

Without external influences and distractions, your mind is free to wander, explore new ideas, and make unique connections. Many artists, writers, and innovators have credited their most creative moments to the time they spent alone.

Improved Problem-Solving

You have the space to think critically and solve problems without external pressures or judgments. This can be especially beneficial when facing complex issues or making important life decisions. Solitude allows you to approach challenges with a clear mind and fresh perspectives.

Independence and Self-Reliance

Spending time alone fosters independence and self-reliance. You learn to rely on yourself for entertainment, decision-making, and problem-solving. This self-sufficiency can boost self-confidence and make you more adaptable in various life situations.

Freedom and Flexibility

Being alone provides freedom and flexibility. You can make spontaneous decisions, explore your interests, and travel at your own pace. This freedom allows you to tailor experiences to your preferences, without compromising for the sake of others.

Emotional Regulation

Solitude offers a space for emotional regulation. It allows you to process emotions, seek closure after difficult experiences, and recharge your emotional energy. It can be a powerful tool for emotional well-being.

The advantages of being alone are diverse and impactful. Solitude provides opportunities for self-discovery, personal growth, and enhanced productivity and creativity. It can improve your ability to handle stress, and foster independence. By embracing solitude as a valuable aspect of life, you can unlock its hidden treasures and reap the many benefits it has to offer.

Whilst we see creativity in the application of AI, it is largely the wisdom of the masses, top 10 answers,  median response, rather than that of a creative individual.

There is no doubt that this creative process is not merely the preserve of the arts and is an important aspect of all disciplines including sciences. Whilst science is a very social activity and the kind of skills developed by those who have gained eminence, or furthered their fields, have been honed by connectivity, those unique skills were developed by individuals and may not replicated by any amount of connectivity.

So like Jason and the Argonauts, we may feel the need to embark on some solitary quests, perhaps not fraught with such danger, nor the delusion of Don Quixote. Just getting there without tragedy or comedy.
